The 1981 Grand Ledge football team would finish 8-1 with their only loss coming to undefeated and Class A playoff qualifier Grand Blanc. Grand Ledge won the CAC title outright for the first time this season. Grand Ledge joined the relatively new CAC conference in 1977, and they had struggled to compete with the much larger Lansing schools (Eastern, Sexton, Everett all had around 2,000+ students at the time): from 1977 to 1990, their first 14 seasons with the new league, 1981 would be their only CAC title during this stretch (they would not win it again until 1991).
In 1981, only 8 teams qualified in 4 divisions for playoffs, making it very difficult to get in. Often times 8-1 teams would be left out, which, unfortunately, happened to GL this season. They would miss qualifying for the playoffs by a narrow margin.
