Coach O'Keefe's final season as the Head Varsity Football Coach at GL was a memorable one (he announced it would be his last before the season began). A 9-3 season that ending in a deep playoff run, and the 2005 Grand Ledge football team avenged the 2002 team. After getting upset by Holt first round of the playoffs in 2002, the 2005 GL football team would return the favor. Holt finished the 2005 season 9-0 and ranked #2 in Division 1. GL finished the season ranked 5th in D1 at 7-2 (losses to Holt by 3 and Wheaton, Illinois by 1 - Wheaton was ranked #1 in Illinois) and had to turn around and play Holt again first round of the playoffs. Unlike the 2002 season, it was GL's turn to beat Holt in the playoffs, this time for the district title AT Holt in dominating fashion 31-7 (GL would achieve this exact same feat again during the 2022 season, weirdly enough). GL would fall 24-14 in the regional title game at Rockford, who would go on to win the Division 1 state title in 2005 for a 2nd straight season.
