Established in 2021, "The Jack" is a traveling trophy awarded to the winner of the annual rivalry football game between Grand Ledge and Holt, named in honor of former coach and player Jack Rarick. 

Jack Rarick was a longtime Grand Ledge, and Holt, assistant football coach, along with the head track & field coach of both the men’s and women’s programs at Holt for many years. Coach Rarick was born and raised in Grand Ledge and graduated from GLHS in 1973. An All-State linebacker at Grand Ledge in high school, Rarick started his coaching career at Holt in 1977 before making his way back to Grand Ledge in 1994 until 1999, leaving the Comets’ program right before they’d go on to win the state title in 2000. Coach Rarick passed away on December 31st, 2020 at the age of 65.

“He was considered, by many, to be one of the best offensive line coaches in the state until he retired,” said current Holt football coach Chad Fulk when reflecting on Rarick’s career. “We always teased him,” said Fulk. “He left Holt just before ’95 when we lost to Detroit Catholic Central in the finals and then left Grand Ledge just before they won it [in 2000].”

“It is sad to lose Jack,” said former Grand Ledge baseball and football coach Pat O’Keefe. “He was such a great friend and one of the most positive coaches that I’ve ever been around. Many kids in Grand Ledge, and Holt, were fortunate to have had him in their lives. I was fortunate to have him as a student, player, coaching partner, adversary, and best of all…a friend.”

GL leads the all time series going into 2026:

The series dates back to 1953-1956 as a CCL (Capital Circuit League) conference matchup with Holt just joining the CCL in 1953. GL would then leave to join the WCC (West Central Conference) in 1957. Holt & GL would not play again until a non-conference matchup from 1970-1971 and again from 1973-1976. GL would join Holt as members of the newly formed CAC in 1977. We have played every year since 1977 as conference opponents!

GL & Holt have also matched up in the D1 playoffs 4 times: 2002, 2005, 2020, & 2022. The winner of the playoff game lost the regular season matchup all 4 times. The playoff series is split 2-2.
