Tony Sweet is entering his 37th season coaching football overall. Coach Sweet has coached football and basketball for more than 30 seasons in multiple communities (majority being in GL), and during that time he has influenced the lives of many players, students, and community members in an immeasurably positive way. Coach Sweet has coached at some level of High School Football for nearly 40 years with more than 30 of those years coming at Grand Ledge High School. He has spent more than 30 years as an Assistant or Head Coach at various intervals at both the Freshman and JV levels, always willing to go where he was needed most within the program to best support the players. During his time coaching Freshman and JV Football, he helped coach many teams to undefeated seasons and conference championships in the 1990s and 2000s as very few of the JV or Freshman teams lost even 1 game per season during those stretches. He also assisted at the Varsity level for Grand Ledge Football for 3 seasons.
Coach Sweet is a 1974 graduate of Grand Ledge High School. During his time as a student-athlete, he was a 3-sport Varsity athlete. He played Varsity Football, Basketball, and Baseball, and he was a 1st-team All-Conference selection in all 3 sports. Coach Sweet was a member of the first team in school history to go 9-0 in 1973 during his senior season. He was also a member of a few of the teams near the end of the incredible run of 6 straight conference championships in football (‘69-’74).
While Coach Sweet has spent many years coaching football, he was also involved extensively in High School Basketball in the state of Michigan. Coach Sweet began his coaching career in basketball at Grand Ledge as a Head 8th Grade Basketball Coach for 1 season (‘83-’84) before becoming the Head JV Coach for 9 seasons (‘84-’91, ‘94-’96). He would then become the Head Varsity Basketball Coach at 3 different schools, coaching at that position for 20 seasons: Leslie High School for 3 seasons (‘91-’94), Grand Ledge High School for 13 seasons (‘96-’10), and Brighton High School for 4 seasons (‘10-’14). During his tenure as the Head Varsity Basketball Coach at Brighton High School, he continued to coach football as an Assistant for their Varsity Football Team, helping coach the team to 3 playoff appearances and a conference championship from 2010-2013.
During his 20 seasons as a Head Varsity Basketball Coach, Coach Sweet coached 2 teams to conference championships (GL ‘02-’03, Brighton ‘10-’11), 6 teams to District Finals (GL ‘92,’94,‘98,’00,’04,’10), and 2 teams to District Championships (GL ‘98, ‘00). Coach Sweet also coached NBA veteran Al Horford, and additional college basketball standouts Jon Horford (UofM/Florida), Joe Estrada (CMU/LCC), and Brian Westrick (MSU).
Mike Van Fossen is entering his 2nd season coaching Grand Ledge High School Football, after 5 years of coaching Grand Ledge Youth and Middle School Football. A 1991 graduate of Holt High School, he earned 7 varsity letters in football, basketball, and tennis. Coach Van Fossen’s high school athletic career culminated with him earning Honorable Mention All-CAC as a tight end, MVP of the varsity basketball team, and being one of the first Holt student athletes to earn both his class’s Most Valuable Athlete and The Walter Pawlowski Award for the class’s Most Valuable Scholar Athlete. Mike went on to play college basketball at Salisbury University in Salisbury, MD, where he was part of the 1991-92 Seagulls team that went 29-2, eventually losing in the NCAA Division III Elite 8. Mike currently works as a Professional Land Surveyor and is a partner at a local surveying and engineering firm.
