The 1991 Grand Ledge football team would finish 8-1 with their only loss coming to the 1991 Class A State Champs East Lansing. Grand Ledge would earn a share of the CAC title as Sexton would go on to beat East Lansing that season whom Grand Ledge would beat the very next game after losing to EL. Grand Ledge joined the relatively new CAC conference in 1977, and they had struggled to compete with the much larger Lansing schools (Eastern, Sexton, Everett all had around 2,000+ students at the time): from 1977 to 1990, their first 14 seasons with the new league, they only won the CAC once (1981). The 1991 season would be the catalyst season that would kickoff multiple decades of success in the CAC, and, later, the CAAC.
In 1991, only 16 teams qualified in each division for playoffs, making it very difficult to get in. Often times 8-1 teams would even be left out, which, unfortunately, happened to GL this season. They would miss qualifying for the playoffs by a single point, and EL, their only loss, would go on to win the state title.
